Although putting sneakers in the washing machine may seem like the fastest way to clean them, this method can ruin them over time. High revolutions, hot water and aggressive detergents can peel off the soles, deform the structure and wear out the materials. So, if you want them to last longer and look like new, there’s a foolproof home trick.
This method is ideal for synthetic or natural leather shoes and also for classic canvas shoes. Best of all, you don’t need expensive or complicated products: just simple ingredients that you probably already have at home.
What’s more, this trick helps to preserve the original shape of the shoes, preventing them from deforming or cracking. By applying it once a week or whenever you notice that they are dull or stained, you will keep them looking impeccable for much longer.
Step by step: how to clean your shoes without a washing machine
To do this you will need 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent, 1 splash of white vinegar and a little warm water. Also, an old toothbrush and a clean cloth.
- Prepare the mixture: in a small bowl, mix the bicarbonate of soda with the washing up liquid and the vinegar. Add lukewarm water until a thin paste is formed.
- Apply the product: using the brush, gently rub the mixture over the entire surface of the shoe, focusing on the dirtiest areas. For the leather parts, do so with gentle circular movements. For the canvas parts, you can apply a little more pressure.
- Leave to act: once the entire surface is covered, leave the mixture to act for about 10 minutes.
- Remove the remains: with a clean, damp cloth, stir the mixture. If necessary, brush with water alone to remove residue from seams or difficult areas.
- Air dry: let the shoes dry in a ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, to prevent discoloration or hardening of the material.
