An option available in many washing machines that reproduces the manual task that for generations helped to save clothes. Modern washing machines conceal a particularly useful tool that many overlook. Although we are used to choosing between cycles such as delicate, fast or eco, there is a classic function that can make all the difference when it comes to removing difficult stains. A resource that replaces the traditional method used by your grandmother and which, thanks to technology, is much easier.
It is the function of pre-wash, an option available in many washing machines that reproduces the manual task that for generations helped to save clothes: pre-soaking them. This preliminary stage allows softening of encrusted dirt and facilitates its removal in the main wash, without the need to resort to aggressive products that can damage the most delicate fabrics.
This is how pre-wash works in washing machines
For years, rubbing, soaking and treating stains by hand was the usual routine in many households. Now, the washing machine allows this process to be replicated automatically. The prewash function is especially useful for sportswear, work clothes or very dirty fabrics, although it can also be used in delicate washes if you prefer to pre-treat stains manually.
During the prewash cycle, the washing machine rinses the clothes with water — which can reach up to 30 °C — and a specific washing powder. The drum rotates slowly for about 20 to 30 minutes, which is enough time to loosen tomato, sweat or coffee stains, among others. Using this option correctly means knowing your way around the washing powder drawer. Most washing machines have three compartments: number II for the main detergent, the symbol I for the prewash and an asterisk or a flower for the fabric softener. Inserting the right product in each space will guarantee the best results without damaging the fabrics.
This function does not replace the main wash, but it does ensure that the most superficial dirt is not redistributed through the clothes during the normal cycle. In this way, the effectiveness of the detergent is considerably improved and the useful life of the garments is prolonged.
